The JBs Ya!On Wedneday the 8th of June one of the finest Hiphop groups of all time is making their way to Cologne’s CBE. The Jungle Brothers have always been some sort of secret favorites of mine when it comes to early nineties rap, and after hearing that Arrested Development packed the Gloria last week and had the good folks of Cologne raving, I can only assume the Jungle Brothers to follow up more than nicely. So if you are having a soft spot for the golden era of Hiphop in your heart this show will definitely be right up your alley. What makes it additionally enticing is that they will perform in their original formation, the way they started the group in 1988, with Mike Gee, Africa Baby Bam on the mics and DJ Sammy B on the turntables.

Yes, das nächste Electronic Beats Festival steht vor der Tür. Am 19. Mai geht es im Kölner E-Werk mal wieder zur Sache – ich freu mich vor allem auf Holy Ghost! aus New York, die zwei Jungs aus dem DFA/ LCD Soundsystem Umfeld haben gerade ihren ersten Longplayer veröffentlicht und ihre Tracks laufen vor allem an unserem Mittwoch im Sixpack regelmässig rauf und runter. Man darf gespannt sein wieviel analoges Equipment die beiden so mitschlepppen, in diesem Video von 2009 lassen sie sich zu genau dem Thema aus… Wait & See.

Animal Collective hatten wir hier auch schon mehrfach, werden an dem Abend natürlich live spielen und wahrscheinlich genauso wie 2009 im Gloria überzeugen. Dazu kommen noch Modeselektor, Nouvelle Vague, Planningtorock und Ada, fertig ist die Sause. Next Tuesday at ArtyFarty Gallery, Cody Chesnutt will be playing his lone Germany gig. No harm if you have forgotten about this cat, his last studio LP “The Headphone Masterpiece” is about 8 years old now and besides a few tracks, floating around in some blogs, it has been pretty quiet around Cody Chesnutt ever since. All that is about to change now, as Mr. Chesnutt has just released his new EP “Black Skin No Value”, which heralds his long awaited follow up LP “Landing on a Hundred”, which is expected some time next year. Show starts at 21.00 sharp, come early!

Another reason one should be visiting the local record store on a regular basis, otherwise you risk missing some great concerts that could sweeten your weekdays! This one is especially sweet for me, since I just bought their latest 12″, which features a very sexy interpretation of Bruce Springsteen’s “I am on fire”. On that note, I am looking forward to catch the live version of it. In case you don’t know the King Georg, make sure you come early, say an hour or so. Otherwise there is always a good chance that they already reached their capacity.

Wowzers. Mal wieder ein Konzert welches sich mit an Sicherheit grenzender Wahrscheinlichkeit wirklich lohnen wird, everybody`s darlings Caribou und Mount Kimbie an einem Abend, in einem Raum. Supportet wird das Ganze von der Berlinerin und Matthew Herbert affinen Barbara Panther, und zwar am kommenden Montag im Kölner Gloria.

Mir geht es bei der Geschichte ehrlich gesagt primär um Mount Kimbie, da mir ihr Output erstens besser gefällt und ich Caribou ausserdem in diesem Jahr schon einmal live sehen durfte – allen die noch nicht das Glück hatten kann ich hier aber uneingeschränkt empfehlen, das Konzert am Montag mitzunehmen. Für Fans dürfte sich diese Frage eh nicht stellen, und von denen soll es ja einige geben.
